Collection: Assateague Island Horses

Why foster a horse? Your symbolic adoption is an ideal way to support the horses living wild and free among the Maryland herd on Assateague Island National Seashore. By becoming a foster parent, you are directly involved in preserving one of America’s most beloved wildlife treasures and their survival in one of our most fragile natural resources.  There is much to discover about the horses of the Maryland herd.  Scroll to the bottom of this website for links to learn more about the Assateague Horses.

AIA would like to thank the photographers who have so graciously allowed us to use their beautiful photographs for the Foster Horse Program and our Assateague Horse ID app.

What happens with my donation?

Proceeds generated by the Foster Horse Program help fund Assateague Island National Seashore’s wild horse management program which is in place to maintain a healthy horse population, preserve their naturally social behaviors, and the island’s ecosystems on which they depend. In addition, as a “foster parent,” you will receive a deluxe padded folder with an 8” x 10” color photo of your horse, a detailed biography, a map indicating where your horse usually resides, and an official certificate recognizing your generous contribution. Additionally, you will receive a one-year subscription to the “Horse Tales” newsletter.
