Fall 2026 Foal-Naming Season

The Tradition of Naming Assateague’s Wild Foals

Each year, the arrival of new foals reminds us of how dynamic the Assateague ecosystem really is. While our core mission is to keep Assateague wild and allow its wildlife to live without human intervention, the annual foal-naming tradition holds a special place in our community's heart.

Originally established by the National Park Service, giving names to the newest members of the herd offers a rare connection to the island's wildlife. While these names help us share their stories and inspire stewardship, we remain dedicated to admiring the herd from a respectful distance and preserving their wild, unmanaged way of life.

The 2026 Foal-Naming Season

This fall, we are excited to open naming opportunities for four of the foals born in 2026. (A second naming period for the remaining 2026 foals will take place early next year.)

You can take part in this longtime tradition and support the island through two distinct opportunities:

  • Two Foal-Naming Auctions: High-bid winners will earn the honor of choosing a name for one of two designated foals.

  • A Foal-Naming Raffle: Two lucky raffle winners will be selected to name the remaining two fall foals.

Every entry ticket and auction bid directly supports the Assateague Island Alliance. Proceeds go toward our ongoing efforts to fund park stewardship, expand educational outreach, build public awareness, and support the vital programs that keep Assateague protected for future generations.
