This full color official guide contains information to learn more about the natural history and unique adaptations found in the Maryland herd of Assateague horses and as well as the physical features used to identify individuals among the herd. Also, inside this 8.5x11", 44-page book, you'll find detailed descriptions of each horse's color and markings, the other horses they are with, and their typical range. Each horse is showcased with stunning photographs of their left and right side, and a full description including their Keiper numbers, markings, and usual locations.
The guide also includes useful information and best practices to keep yourself and the horses safe while visiting the island and observing their natural and wild behaviors. New this year, we've added a few surprise fun pages toward the end to engage the young and young at heart in their quest to discover the fascinating herd of Maryland horses. The guide will be updated annually to add each year's new foals, and to say good-bye the horses who have passed.

Originally authored by AIA volunteer, Jen Britton, the 2025 edition was updated and expanded by AIA Board members Cally Carson and Rebekka Ortega. We are so grateful for the collaborative effort of all who donated their time to make this project a reality for the FIFTH year. Especially to the dedicated photographers who trekked the island seeking elusive horses to capture identifiable images for this years guide. AIA is proud of this educational outreach tool and it's ability to foster stewardship and respect for the island most famous inhabitants. From the author, "I hope the guide both enhances the enjoyment that long-time island visitors experience and also creates a unique learning experience for new visitors, all while supporting our love and appreciation of these marvelous horses."
All proceeds support Assateague Island's Alliance's mission to promote the awareness, education, and stewardship of Assateague Island National Seashore's wildlife and natural resources for the enjoyment of current and future generations.
