N9BFNS "Spirit" is a solid unmarked chestnut mare with a split mane. She was born in June of 1994. At the age of 23, Spirit finally got a proper name! She was named by "Name that Horse" contest winner Grace Vander Tuig from St. Louis, Missouri who chose the name because she was part of the Spirit of St. Louis Marching Band. The name really suits a horse living wild and free on Assateague Island!
Spirit's dam was unnamed chestnut mare N9BFN and her sire was N4E "Jerry". Spirit had many siblings, most of which were through her sire Jerry. All have since passed on except for one, N9BFQX "Bailey". Spirit has produced two foals in her lifetime, the late N9BFNSZ "Fonzi" in 2001 and N9BFNS-E "Something Special" in 2006.
Spirit was with stallion N6BIR-B "Bayberry" for quite some time, but younger stallion N9BM-JO "Adriana's Happy Camper" has since taken over most of his band. The band can often be found near Tingles Island on the Over Sand Vehicle (OSV) area, and in the Developed Area in the summer.
