We understand the excitement that a new birth can bring, but we also know that every interaction a wild horse has with humans contributes to them growing accustomed to our presence, ultimately putting them at risk. Of course, everyone wants to share the beauty of the island and its inhabitants, but the safety of the animals, and the visitors, is the priority.

It is vitally important to any new foal’s well-being that visitors give them, and all of the wild horses, plenty of space. Maintain a minimum of a bus lengths distance, for your own safety and so that you can enjoy the horses without intruding in their lives or influencing their behavior.  Never approach, touch or feed the horses or any other wildlife and if a curious horse approaches you, move away. To allow new foals an opportunity to adjust to life outside the womb and mitigate a rush of visitors to sneak a peek, AIA will delete any photos posted to our social media sites for at least three days until an official announcement has been made, and we encourage other public social media sites to do the same. 

If you should discover a new foal, as exciting as it is, please resist the temptation to shout it from the rooftops and post the news for all to see. The first few days after birth are a crucial time for the mare and foal to bond, for the other horses in the band to adjust to the new addition, and for the new foal to learn how to interact with its environment from it's mother and other band members.  Please do your part to keep this as stress-free as possible.
