Discover Assateague’s seasonal wildlife and culture through various art techniques with gifted painter and art teacher Joanne Guilfoil. In each class, all levels are welcome to discover one of the islands diverse inhabitants while experimenting with varied methodology. All supplies and materials will be provided. Classes held on the first Thursday of the month September through December, 6-8pm. Classes held at the Assateague Island Environmental Education Center located at 7206 National Seashore Lane, Berlin, MD 21811.
HORSESHOE CRABS IN ACRYLICS: Thursday September 5, 2019; 6-8pm
This class welcomes late spring and the arrival of horseshoe crabs to our area. Learn more about acrylic paints while working from photos and found crab shells to create a painting on canvas, ready to hang or give.
SEA TURTLES IN GOUACHE: Thursday October 3, 2019; 6-8pm
Celebrate summer and welcome sea turtles to our shores for nesting. Learn about gouache paint, an opaque water color and why it is perfect for this detailed work. See published note cards and photos to create a small field-guide type painting, ready to print.
FISH AND FEATHERS IN PRINTMAKING: Thursday November 7, 2019; 6-8pm
Have some late summer fun with fish and feathers. Learn about Gyotaku, a method of Japanese fish printing. We will use rubber fish replicas and found or purchased feathers to create lovely prints on paper and a canvas bag.
HUNGERFORD CARDS IN GOUACHE: Thursday, December 5, 2019: 6-8pm
View this fine collection of note cards and learn about the painting tradition well known to this area. We will go back with gouache to replicate the images and details so appreciated in these paintings. Create a painting for a card of your own.
