Vintage Hungerford Card Reprints

Originally reprinted in 2015 to celebrate Assateague Island National Seashore's 50th birthday, these cards remain popular as a reflection of Assateague's rich history. Each package contains four blank cards, 4"x6" folded, printed on 14pt cardstock with white envelopes.  There are three different sets of four different cards; Christmas (Santa Claus in each image), Holiday (holiday theme without Santa Claus), and Wildlife (driftwood images no association with holidays).  Each card depicts one of each design in that set.

There is an interpretive message on the back of each card explaining the significance of the image that reads:

"In the 1960s and 1970s, one of the remaining active homes on Assateague Island belonged to Mabel and Churchill Hungerford. Owners of a New Jersey based company that built custom water treatment systems, the Hungerfords commuted to their second home weekly. Each year Mrs. Hungerford would commission an artist to paint their Christmas card. Some cards showcased the couple’s pastimes such as hunting geese and collecting wildlife shaped driftwood, while others reflected current events.

Assateague Island National Seashore was established in 1965. In celebration of the National Seashore’s 50th Birthday, Assateague Island Alliance is proud to reprint these vintage Christmas cards, revealing a part of Assateague Island’s rich history. Image reprinted with permission from the private collection of Allen Sklar."
